W.’s first time ever, and my first time in nearly 6 years (when the Phillies defeated the Sox by the score of 11-3 on July 17, 1999), we attended a Red Sox game in that great baseball shrine, the hallowed ground that is, Fenway Park.
We had great seats – down the left field line, 2 seats off the wall behind third base where the seats jut out to a distance of a mere 18 inches from fair territory. It was great being so close to left field, where Teddy Ballgame took up residence for so many years; current Sox left fielder, All-Star and World Series MVP Manny Ramirez, even threw a ball to W. (it was such a thrill for W. to have a big-league player toss him a ball from left field!)
After the game, we took advantage of the opportunity to walk the entire perimeter of the field along the warning track (I even scooped up a small handfull of dirt from straightaway center field in front of the triangle.) To top off the day – the Sox beat the Tribe, 5-2.
Things have changed in 6 years – the centerfield scoreboard and seating have been changed, new seats above the Green Monster and right field roof, and of course, the 2004 World Series Championship pennant flying in center.
